Zion Lateef Williamson is a basketball player from the United States. Williamson has drawn notice since high school for his ability to “slam dunk,” a skill that requires a player to leap into the air and slam the ball into the basket through one or both hands. He was named ‘South Carolina Mr. Basketball’ during his high school career. Williamson participated in McDonald’s All-American competition where he was the runner up. In his sophomore, he was named with many titles for his outstanding performance in different matches. He won numerous best player awards. Sports has always been his passion and later became his major means of earning as well.

Zion Williamson was born to Sharonda Sampson and Lateef Williamson on 6th July 2000 in Salisbury, North Carolina, United States. He was a football defensive lineman at Darlington’s ‘Mayo High School’ and afterwards at Salisbury’s ‘Livingstone College,’ a black Christian college. Sampson later went on to teach health and physical education to middle school students. Williamson was called after Mount Zion, a biblical place near Jerusalem, by his mother. When Williamson was two years old, his family relocated to Florence. His parents split when William was only five years old. A few years later, his mother married a former basketball player named Lee Anderson. His mother as well as his stepfather has been very supportive throughout his career. He joined the basketball team at Marion’s ‘Johnakin Middle School,’ where his mother coached him.  He was also a point guard who only lost three games in two years. Williamson was a soccer player and a football quarterback before turning to basketball. He has been able to perform well in every game he played.

Williamson’s professional career is yet to begin in 2018, as he continues to play college basketball for Duke. In the upcoming 2019 NBA Draft, he is expected to be the first choice. He won his third state title as a senior, averaging 36.4 points and 11.4 rebounds per game. Williamson also participated in the All-American Game of McDonald and the Nike Hoop Summit. A football scholarship was also offered to him from Louisiana State University, where he was expected to play tight end, but he declined.

Williamson was selected first overall in the 2019 NBA draught by the New Orleans Pelicans on June 20, 2019. He officially joined the Pelicans on July 1, 2019. Williamson tore his meniscus in the preseason of his rookie season on October 13, 2019. He scored 17 straight points in 3:08 minutes during the fourth quarter, finishing with 22 points and 7 rebounds in 18 minutes.
